Joaquín (Jack) Segura is a full-time translator, editor and writer. Born in New York, he grew up and did his elementary and secondary schooling in Spain. He returned to the United States at age 17 and has lived in New York City (and now Valley Cottage) ever since. He attended night college at Pratt Institute, where he studied Electric Power and Communications, and took a two-year night course on radio and television at RCA Institutes. He was assistant head of the translation department at IT&T, where he specialized in telephony and electronic translations into Spanish. He also worked as a science and technical editor, and later editor-in chief for the Spanish edition of LIFE en Español. From there he went on to Science & Medicine Publishing Company, where he was an editor and co-director of operations, in charge of various English medical publications. For the past 15 years, Segura has operated as a freelance technical and medical translator for many of the largest American companies, as well as for translation agencies. His fields of competence include electronics in general, communications, medical subjects and instrumentation, computational science and technology, lexicography, publishing, and advertising. In addition to Spanish, he also translates from French, Italian, Portuguese, and Catalan into English. A full member of the Academia Norteamericana de la Lengua Española and a corresponding member of the Royal Spanish Language Academy, Segura has worked with both academies in the preparation of new dictionaries. As chairman of the Academia Norteamericana’s Translations Commission, and with the cooperation of a body of advisers, he edits a bulletin on language matters, Glosas. Segura is also editorial adviser and contributor to Apuntes.
