| CONFERENCE ON SPANISH TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETATION SHOWS WHY U.S. MARKET IS UNIQUE AND WHY USERS SHOULD CARE | |||||

NEW YORK, March 2002 –SpanSIG, a New York
based nonprofit group of Spanish<>English language professionals,
in conjunction with Instituto Cervantes of New York, recently held a
one-day conference on scientific, commercial, and legal translation and
interpretation.
The room was packed throughout the day, attesting to the relevance of the presentations to professional translators and interpreters, and to users of their services. Talks highlighted the uniqueness of the US Hispanic market and the translation and interpreting techniques appropriate to it; the differences between common law (US and UK) and Roman law (Spain and Latin America) systems, and how and why to avoid the pitfalls of copying English styles too closely; and what is missing in the academic training of interpreters outside the judicial system. Other presentations dealt with computer translation and localization, technical and scientific translation: yesterday and today; vocabulary and specialized translation; medical translation; and the world of simultaneous interpreting. All of these presentations, by people at the top of their fields, highlighted the importance of professional training and specialization. They also showed why users of translation and interpretation services put themselves at risk if they don’t use qualified professionals, which still happens all too often. In medical interpreting, for instance, a substandard interpreter may mean the difference between life and death. In other areas, a bad translation may ruin a company’s entry into the Hispanic markets.
